Patronymica Britannica (1860)
WOMBWELL. An estate and chapelry in the W. Riding of Yorkshire, still the property of the Baronet, who claims from Robert de Worabwell, temp. King Stephen. A branch removed into Kent in the XV. century, and built Wombwell Hall, near Northtleet. Pliilipott Vill. Cant. It seems probable that two families in succession adopted this name from the estate ; for, according to Mr. Shirley, the pedigree commences with Hugh Wombwell of AVombwell, son of Henry Lotrell de Wombwell, temp. Edw. III., implying a change of ownership at that date. See Noble and Gentle Men.
