The Jorden surname in historical dictionaries
Patronymica Britannica (1860)
JORDiVN". JORDEN. Not, as has been fancifidlj conjectured, from the river Jordan, in Crusading times, but from Jourdain, an early Norman baptismal name, probably corrupted from the Lat. Hodiernus, wliich was a not uncommon jersonal name of the same period. It may bo remarked that the names Jourdaiu aud Hodierua, tlie feminine form, occur almost contempoi'aneousl)' in tlie pedigree of Sackville. Marin's Dutch Diet, defines Jordeu as Gregory, " een man's naam, Gregohe, uom d' homme."
