The Sutton surname in historical dictionaries
An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names (1857)
(origin: Local) A town in Devonshire, England--the south town.
Patronymica Britannica (1860)
SUTTON. In A-Sax. charters Sud-tihi — ' the southern homestead or enclosure' — a name consequently of very common application. Besides single farms and minor divisions, there are more than sixty Suttons among the parishes and other civil and ecclesiastical districts of England. Heraldiy also attests the commonness of the surname by more than fifty coats assigned to it. See Norton, Easton, and Weston.
