The Lovell surname in historical dictionaries

Patronymica Britannica (1860)

LOVEL. LOVELL. A very common surname, since our heraldric dictionaries assign about 40 coats to it. It is a derivative of the Lat. hqn<s, wolf, thus : Lupus, Loup, LupelliTS, Louvel, Lovel. The celebrated Hugh d'Abrincis, Earl of Chester, surnamed Lupus, was a nephew of the Conqueror. The barons Lovel, introduced into England at the Conquest, were lords of Yvery in Normandy. Ascelin, the son of Robert, the head of this race, who succeeded in 1083, was called Lupus on account of his viol 3nt temper. His younger son, William, Earl of Yver}'', acquired the diminutive sobriquet of Lupellus, the ' little wolf,' afterwards softened to Lupel, Luvel, and Lovel. Baronage. See Wolf.
