The Bunyan surname in historical dictionaries
An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names (1857)
(origin: Welsh, Celtic, and Gaelic.) From Bunan, a squat, short person.
Patronymica Britannica (1860)
BUNYAN. Nomen venerabile! Although associated in sound Avith that pedal excrescence, a h(nnwn,—so calculated to hinder the Progress of a Pilgrim 1— this surname is in reality derived from the Welsh Ab Kuion, the sou of Enion, a personal name. So Bevan from Ab Evan, Bithell from Ab Ithell, &c. From Benyon to Bunyan, the transition is easy and natural. The Biinyans were a Gipsy race.
