HANSARD. An ancient personal name, which Mr. Ferguson derives from the Gothic ans semi-deus, a hero, with the termination Jieard, hard. The Hansards of Evenwood, co. Durham, formerly had a seat in the jalatinate parliament convened by the bishop of Durham. Folks of Shields, p. 18. Hansard is also a provincialism for a bill-hook or hedge-bill. The Hansards of Durham were commonly characterized as the Haxbsojie Hans.'Vuds.
